About Rasphuis

Rasphuis examines how the Dutch Republic’s moral experiments—forced labor, revelation-driven certainty, and civic watchdogs—shaped modern assumptions about justice and conscience. Through craft, photography, and historical inquiry, the project seeks to recover an empirical, humane way of seeing that the seventeenth century both invented and betrayed.

A workshop, not a museum: Rasphuis joins material craft with archival memory to explore how flawed beginnings still echo today. Each investigation—typographic, photographic, historical—asks how authority, virtue, and evidence were defined, and how a more attentive, craft-based understanding might illuminate our present choices.
